A free showing of this deeply personal documentary that reveals rebirth and courage within America’s deeply conservative Bible Belt as Cole, a transgender man, struggles to find a church that will affirm his identity and support his relationship with his girlfriend, Ashley. With a small group of supportive friends, relatives, and Ashley, Cole’s search for love and belonging leads him to a radical revision of what faith and church can be.
What makes up a house? Four walls, some windows and doors, bright lights and sturdy floors. A doorbell. A couch. A rug. But what makes up a home? Not as simple. Come witness the joy, anticipation, pain, disappointment, confusion, and contentment as our ensemble explores the many meanings of home.
The show will last approximately 2 hours with one 15 minute intermission. The show will be followed by a talkback led by SPECTRUM’s youth. All donations collected at this event will be used to fund future programming for SPECTRUM.
Spectrum, an educational collaboration between TheatreLAB and Richmond Triangle Players, presents CLOSER TO HOME. Spectrum is a youth outreach program for high school students; through a series of master classes and workshops, the participants collectively produce their own original piece of theatre.
